Hygiene & Cleanings
The details of your child’s visit will depend on their age and stage of dental health. If your child is very young and does not yet have most of their baby teeth, Dr. Courtney will perform a comprehensive oral exam and clean any teeth that have erupted. Then, she’ll discuss your child’s oral development and health, and answer any questions you may have about caring for your child’s mouth. If your child is older and has most or all of their baby teeth, we’ll conduct a comprehensive oral exam and teeth cleaning, and we may also recommend x-rays, if necessary.
Does My Child Need An X-Ray?
The Importance Of Dental X-Rays
X-rays are an important diagnostic tool and these up-close images of your child’s mouth help Dr. Courtney identify oral development issues, tooth decay, and other problems that may not be apparent during a routine oral exam. Dr. Courtney will only recommend an x-ray if she believes it to be necessary and important for your child’s oral health, and we use low-dose x-ray machines that are safe for children of all ages.
Reverse Minor Tooth Decay
Benefits Of Fluoride Treatments
Fluoride can be used to treat and reverse minor cases of tooth decay that have weakened enamel and formed “soft spots” on the outer layer of your child’s tooth. During a fluoride treatment, a highly-concentrated fluoride past is painted onto the weakened enamel, allowing it to “remineralize,” regain its strength, and resist the formation of a cavity, preventing further tooth decay.
A Non-Invasive Alternative To Fillings
Silver Diamine Fluoride
Silver Diamine Fluoride (also known as SDF) can be used to halt tooth decay and prevent it from progressing. This unique blend of silver, ammonia, fluoride, and water can be used to treat decay in a child’s baby teeth. SDF is used to prevent decay from getting worse until your child’s tooth falls out naturally or they are old enough to have a filling or stainless steel crown placed.
Prevent Cavity Formation
How Dental Sealants Protect Teeth
Dental sealants are made out of a clear, colorless liquid resin that is applied to your child’s rear molars. After it is applied, the resin quickly hardens into a barrier that prevents bacteria, acid and food debris from contacting your child’s teeth directly. In turn, this prevents the formation of cavities. Sealants are recommended for kids of all ages, and can help prevent cavities for up to 10 years.
